After having come under growing criticism from members within his own party and following Thuli Madonsela’s ‘Guptagate’ questioning; President Jacob Zuma has clearly been unable to escape the headlines surrounding his controversial tenure. To provide some respite, it did seem like the #feesmustfall protests would divert attention away from him. However, with the recent death of his rape accuser Khwezi, it has clearly been a heavy few months for the beleaguered leader.
Many know I am clearly not a big fan of Jacob Zuma -in fact, I can’t stand the bra. When you grow up in the Cape Flats you learn to spot a skelm or ‘chancer’ anywhere. So I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see what magic would be performed to shift the attention away from him. This morning -while Zuma just happens to be out of the country- a magician managed to do exactly just that. The news that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been issued with a formal summons for fraud, makes one wonder about the timing.
So as the Rand falls to as much as 3.5% since the NPA announced the charge; it seems like -for now- the magic is effective. So yes Mr President, ‘Siem Sala Biem, now look at Pravin’ may be working; however to me, it will always be ‘Abracadabra, you’re still a Mampara’.
