CAPE TOWN – David Warner and Steve Smith have stepped down as captain and vice-captain for the remainder of the Test match.
Cricket Australia confirmed that they have been stripped of their leadership duties for the third test match at Newlands Cape Town.
This follows the ball tampering incident that took place on the third day involving Cameron Bancroft.
The decision was made by Cricket Australia just before the continuation of play. This was preceded by both Bancroft and Smith admitting to have attempted to change the state of the ball to get better reverse swing.
Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland released a statement today saying, “Following discussions with Steve Smith and David Warner they have agreed to stand down as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively for the remainder of this Test match. This Test match needs to proceed, and in the interim we will continue to investigate this matter with urgency.”
The acting captain for the remainder of the Test match will be wicketkeeper Tim Paine.
