A 34-year-old man from Sharpeville, Sedibang is expected to appear in court for the murder of his girlfriend whose decomposing body was discovered buried in a shallow grave in his back yard.
Relatives of the 44-year-old woman reported her disappearance to Sharpeville Police Station after attempting to contact her since Christmas.
The man who accompanied the relatives to the police station denied having any knowledge of his girlfriend’s whereabouts.
South African Police Service (SAPS) released a statement stating that upon a preliminary investigation, police where led to the man’s house in Sharpeville. Arriving on site, police were led by a stench coming from the backyard and immediately activated the relevant role players, including Search and Rescue K9.
The K9 search confirmed a woman’s body was buried in the yard. Pathology services exhumed the body on Monday, 4 January 2021, and the woman’s relatives confirmed her identity.
SAPS added that the suspect was arrested on the spot and charged with the murder of his girlfriend and is expected to appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate Court on Thursday, 7 January 2021.
