In a statement released on Monday, Education Minister, Debbie Schäfer, asked that matriculants take the necessary preventative measures to avoid contracting Covid-19, warning that this would prevent them from writing their final exams this year.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has said that any learner who tests positive for Covid-19 or has come into direct contact of a confirmed case, will not be able to write their exams this year as they would need to recover or quarantine. The affected learners will only be able to write their exams in May/June 2021.

The WCED says that while safety protocols are implemented at schools, parents and learners have to take responsibility for what happens after school.

The 2020 National Senior Certificate exams commence on 5 November.
