Two-Year-Old Girl Hit by Stray Bullet in Khayelitsha

According to reports, a 2-year-old girl was wounded by a stray bullet following an alleged hit on two men in Khayelitsha on Friday.

The little girl, Alunamda Makhonco, was hit while playing outside with her friends. Police reportedly found more than 50 bullet casings at the scene in Mbekweni Street, Site C.

Alunamda’s mother, Nomvulo Makhonco, 40, told reporters she was at home sleeping after working a night shift when she heard the shots. “I had seen her leave with another child her age to go and play when the shots went off and the whole time I was praying that she was safe, inside someone’s house,”.

Nomvulo says she went outside and saw the two dead men, she heard her daughter crying and thought it was because she got a fright. However, she soon saw that her daughter was in fact bleeding too.

The toddler was rushed to a nearby day hospital and later transferred to Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

According to the Weekend Argus, the shots rang out shortly after 4 pm.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the shooting saying, “during the shooting incident, a 2-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound and was admitted to hospital. The motive is unknown and the suspects are yet to be arrested.”
