On Friday night at a Covid-19 roadblock in Deneysville in the Free State, two police officers died while on duty after an alleged drunk driver crashed into them.
The accident happened at approximately 20:15 along the R594 while the Warrant Officer and Sergeant were inspecting another vehicle as required by Covid-19 regulations. According to the SAPS media statement, the suspect, the driver of a 1400 light delivery vehicle was allegedly heavily under the influence of alcohol.
The driver is currently in police custody and will possibly face charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and contravention of the Regulations of the Disaster Management Act.
