A 2-month-old twin baby, Kwahlelo Tiwane from Khayelitsha, was kidnapped by a fake social worker on 16 January.
According to a statement released by the SAPS, the mother of the twins, Asanda Tiwane (29), was approached by the suspect on 15 January. The woman came to their residence in Khayelitsha and introduced herself as a social worker. According to IOL, the woman promised to help the mother of three obtain food hampers and a R1000 voucher.
SAPS said that the woman made copies of the baby’s birth certificate and clinic card and returned the next day, to accompany the mother to her supposed office in Parow.
IOL reports that the woman told Asanda to buy food at a nearby outlet while she went to her office with one of the twins. “I called her twice and after not picking up I panicked. After some time she sent an SMS saying I should go back home, she will keep the baby until our situation at home has improved and I never heard from her again,” Tiwane said.
Police urge anyone with information to come forward while they continue their investigation. Information can be forwarded to Detective Joy Sumsodien of Bellville FCS on 082 522 1095.
