The mayor of the eThekwini Municipality, Mxolisi Kaunda, has encouraged all race enthusiasts to participate in the “Race the Comrades Legends” Virtual Race, which takes place on Sunday.

The Comrades Marathon would have seen it’s 95th instalment this year had it not been for the novel Coronavirus. However, although the physical race might be cancelled the virtual race will consist of a 5km, 10km, 21.1km, 45km and 90km.

“We commend the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) for keeping the spirit of the Comrades Marathon alive through this virtual race”, says Kaunda.

The CMA is ensuring that ‘Race the Comrades Legends’ is The Ultimate Virtual Race and with the significant difference of creating a sense of camaraderie for athletes within their social space, adding value to running clubs and the running scene; and helping raise funds for the charitable sector amid the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.

Kaunda added, “As we grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic, we have no doubt that this virtual race will restore hope for millions of our people and will further entrench the solidarity within our community which has been the major ingredient in our efforts to deal with this pandemic,”
