On Sunday, Tanzanian President John Magufuli announced an investigation into the reliability of imported testing kits after samples from animals and fruit returned positive.

Magufuli announced that security forces were instructed to collect samples from a goat, a quail and pawpaw. These samples were then labelled as human and sent to the National Reference and Public Health laboratory.

All the samples came back positive. After receiving the results, Magufuli says it is possible that some people who tested positive may not have the virus. According to reports, the bizarre results suggests that the fault may lie with lab equipment, imported testing kits or technicians.

The Tanzanian government has received criticism for downplaying the virus and not providing daily reports on infections. Their last update was on Wednesday, reporting 480 confirmed cases, 18 deaths and 167 recoveries.
