On Saturday a fire broke out at the foot of Table Mountain in the Oranjezicht area but, even with the strong wind, Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue teams managed to contain it by 4.40 am on Sunday.
Speaking to Cape Talk’s Sara-Jayne King on Sunday morning, Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse said, one firefighter was injured and treated in hospital, however, he was later discharged.
Carelse continued saying, “there were no other injuries. A couple of houses were evacuated, but some residents stayed behind. Only one house in Rugby Road was damaged as a result of the fire.”
Although the fire is contained, crews will monitor the situation for flare-ups throughout the day on Sunday. Carelse said the night crew will be relieved at 9 am.
Residents are urged to call the helpline, 021 480 7700, as soon as a fire is spotted.
