The Springboks have won the prestigious World Team of the Year award at the 2020 Laureus Awards in Berlin.
According to Sport24, the 2019 Rugby World Cup champions were up against tough competition for the award, including Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League-winning Liverpool side and the USA women’s football team who won the women’s World Cup.
The Academy stated that the Springboks’ “incredible Rugby World Cup triumph showed the unique power of sport to unite.”

According to a statement by SA Rugby President Mr. Mark Alexander, “We are absolutely bursting with pride and would like to congratulate Rassie, Siya and the Springbok team, as well as the management for receiving this fantastic award, They were so heroic on the field and through their excellent off-field conduct, they were true examples of excellent South African ambassadors.“
He ended by saying, “On behalf of SA Rugby, I would like to congratulate the entire Springbok team and management on this fantastic accomplishment. We saw how powerful a successful Springbok team can be, uniting South Africans from all walks of life, and we are immensely proud of their achievements.”
