A Kraaifontein family has been left in shock and disbelief after their six-year-old daughter was shot and killed by alleged gangsters in the area during load shedding on Saturday.

The little girl, Gaylin Cupido, was walking with her family in Rusticana street in Scottsdene on their way to relatives when gunshots went off.

According to her mother Regina, load shedding in the area started at 6 pm and around 7 pm they decided to walk to relatives who live nearby. They were walking one moment and the next they were on the ground with shots being fired all around them. Regina said it wasn’t long before she realised her daughter had been shot in the chest.

It is believed the gangs in the area started shooting once the power went off during a scheduled load shedding and Gaylin was shot by a stray bullet.

Regina says, “Gaylin was so excited to get out of the house, she was jumping up and down. We walked to Geneva Court around the corner from us at around 7 pm. She and her brother Jaden were walking hand in hand, and I held her other hand when the shots rang out in the dark and that was when I felt her hand leave mine.”

Gaylin was alive when a man nearby rushed them to Kraaifontein Day Hospital on arrival doctors confirmed she had died.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the Kraaifontein police have opened a murder case and no arrests have been made.
