According to a SAPS report, positive outcomes were received when Mbekweni SAPS members were on a pursuit to seize unlicensed firearms in the province.
An Intelligence driven operation on 6 March at 18:30 in Mbekweni, Paarl, resulted in the members following up on information that taxi drivers and guards kept firearms in their taxis to shoot on rival taxis.
The Mbekweni SAPS, Public Order Police and Winelands Cluster arrested seven suspects, aged between 21 and 49, on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The vigilant members acted upon information received and conducted a search at the Wamkelekele Mbekweni taxi rank, where they found two 9mm firearms, magazines and ammunition in one of the taxis.
Eight cellphones were also confiscated. All suspects were arrested and they are expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrates Court on Monday, 9 March.
