CAPE TOWN – A second cyclist has died in the Cape Town Cycle Tour today.
Following earlier reports of a 40 year old male who died in a collision that involved 20 cyclists at Wynberg Hill, there has now been a second fatal incident.
Race director David Bellairs confirmed this in a statement on Sunday afternoon. He stated: “In the second incident a male participant succumbed to a suspected heart attack at Smitswinkel Bay at approximately 10:22am. Once again we are respecting the family’s wishes and not releasing his name.”
The organisers added, “Our most sincere condolences go out to the families of both these participants.”
This year’s Cycle Tour has over 35 000 participants and is in it’s 40th year. The first race started at 6:15am on Sunday, with Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille and Premier Helen Zille welcoming the first group.
