SASSA System Glitch Causes Duplicate Payments

On Monday the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirmed that it had experienced technical errors that led to incorrect payments for its Western Cape recipients.

Approximately 83% of recipients in the province received duplicate payments. The remaining beneficiaries received no payment at all.

SASSA spokesperson, Shivani Wahab, announced that they plan to have payments available by Tuesday afternoon, so that people who could not withdraw today can access their funds. The social grant agency will be initiating payment reversals with the South African banks; however, where it is not possible, the agency will try to recover the funds from the affected clients.

Beneficiaries who withdrew their extra payment will not be paid in June.
