A 41-year-old man whom police identified as Mark Paul has been arrested on suspicion of rape against a minor, following a public appeal for his whereabouts.

On 21 May 2020, the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit in Port Alfred were seeking assistance from the community in tracing Mark Paul. Following a case that was opened in December 2019, the suspect fled Alexandria and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Magistrate in Alexandria.

Several attempts made to contact Paul proved fruitless, however, the public appeal provided the first leads with police receiving information that the suspect was living in Uitenhage.

Thanks to the public, Paul was eventually arrested in Gauteng and transported to the Eastern Cape. He made a brief appearance in the Alexandria Magistrates Court on Friday. He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Friday 18th June 2021.

The SAPS extended its appreciation to the community who boldly assisted in the investigation.
