According to reports, the deputy justice minister has requested that the Office of the Public Protector investigate claims that Altecia Kortjie tried to get a protection order against her alleged killer but was turned away by a court.

It is believed that Altecia went to Bellville Magistrate court to get a protection order against her boyfriend a week before she was brutally murdered. However, the protection order was allegedly denied due to COVID-19 restrictions and she was told to return and reapply in September.

A week later family members found the bodies of Altecia Kortjie and her 7-year-old daughter, Raynecia, lifeless at home in Belhar.

Oupa Segalwe, a spokesperson for the Public Protector, said the allegations against the Bellville Magistrates Court would be investigated immediately.

“We opened a file immediately and referred it to our Cape Town office for an urgent investigation.”
