Sibonise Primary School’s Principal, Mr ML Madonsela was killed on Friday afternoon when a man opened fire on him and the school security guard.

The principal and security guard were allegedly on their way out of the schoolyard in KwaMashu KZN when a white Etios pulled up outside the school gate.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, “An unknown male jumped off the passenger’s seat and shot at him several times. He died instantly,”. The security guard reportedly survived the incident and has been receiving treatment.

eNCA reports that the principal was shot and wounded last year and was in critical care for 6 months before returning back to school.

Provincial MEC Kwazi Mshengu has expressed his condolences to the Madonsela family saying, “We are calling on anyone that may have information to contact the local police station. It is very disheartening to be faced with such an incident just when we are still grappling with Covid-19 and have just reopened our schools. We are working with the police to bring the perpetrators to book.”

The investigation is on-going and no arrests have been made yet.
