According to a SAPS media statement, the Manenberg community turned on police and damaged their vehicles after a 23-year old suspect was arrested for possession of drugs.
In an intelligence-led, integrated operation in Manenberg, members of the Anti-Gang Unit, the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement and traffic services made the arrest in Thames Walk.
Police were busy loading the suspect into a SAPS van when the community started throwing the vehicles with stones. Five of the law enforcement and traffic services vehicles were damaged.
The police arrested 17 suspects between the ages of 16 and 46 for public violence after dispersing the crowd. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
The statement read, “Attacks on police will not be tolerated. Those who engage in such unlawful conduct will face the full might of the law. More operations are set to continue in the area in an effort to create safety and calm.”
