According to reports, the Athlone Police Station in Cape Town has been closed after a police officer at the station tested positive for COVID-19.

On Sunday police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said, “I can confirm that a warrant officer at the Athlone police station in the Western Cape has tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first police officer in the province to test positive,”

Naidoo said there were about 20 other officers on duty, all of whom were placed in self-isolation while awaiting their test results.

The police station will reportedly remain closed until Monday. Community members can still source police services from the station’s community service centre which operates from a building adjacent to the police station.
