Three people drown in a dam following heavy rains during baptism ceremony

Two men and a woman have been reported to have drowned at the Liebenbergvlei dam near Bethlehem in the Free State while attending a baptism ceremony on Saturday.

In a statement Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says that the men, aged 24 and 25, and the woman, aged 24, allegedly drowned due to heavy current water flow caused by worsening weather conditions.

“The body of the female was retrieved by Lejweleputswa District K9 Search and Rescue team, whilst the two men are still missing as the search was provisionally withdrawn due to bad weather conditions and heavy current water flow,” the Brigadier says.

Police further reported that the body of a 14-year-old boy was found in a dam in an open field near the Ed-U-College in Welkom after swimming with friends on Sunday.

“It is believed that the boy got into trouble when the water was deeper than they thought. One of the friends ran to get help, but unfortunately, by the time emergency services arrived the boy had been underwater for some time,” ER24 says.

The boy was declared dead on the scene.

Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says that a case of inquest has been registered for further investigation.
