Nelson Mandela Bay District Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and SAPS Bethelsdorp arrested a 16-year-old teenager in the case of the rape of a girl (12) in Booysen Park.
“It is alleged that on Saturday 09 January 2021 at approximately 14:00, a 12-year-old girl was swimming in a local dam in Booysen Park with friends.
“When she got out of the water to change, she was approached by two males who forced her into the bushes and then raped her,” Captain Khaya Tonjeni.
The victim’s mother opened a case of rape at the Bethelsdorp police station after the victim’s friends told her what had happened.
The 16-year-old was arrested at his home in the Qunu area on Monday, 18 January. He is expected to appear in the Nerina House juvenile court in Port Elizabeth on charges of rape.
Investigations will continue as police try to trace the other suspect in the case.
“Violence against women and children are a priority for the South African Police Service, therefore every effort must be made to arrest the perpetrator/s and bring them before a court of law,” Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga says.
