A 47-year-old suspect has been taken into police custody and charged with fraud and possession of stolen property after the suspect was found with 70 SASSA cards on Saturday.
The Durban Central District Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation after the suspect was seen withdrawing money from different SASSA cards at the same ATM located in Anton Lembede Street. The suspect was later seen driving an exclusive Mercedes Benz which police report was recently bought.
Captain Nqobile Gwala reports that 70 SASSA cards, R 7640,00 in cash and the motor vehicle were seized from the suspect.
“Further investigation conducted by the team led them to the suspect’s residence in Umhlanga where a USB stick was found after being thrown own of the window. It was seized by police for further investigation,” Gwala reported.
On the bust, the Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal Major General Thulani Gonya said, “I am pleased with the arrest of the fraudster and the seizure of Sassa cards. It is heart breaking to learn that there are people who are robbing our citizens who wait anxiously for their money but only to be disappointed when no monies are paid into their accounts. A thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure that all involved are brought to book.”
The suspect will be expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on the aforementioned charges.
