News24 reports that a suspect by the name of Themba Daniel Shikwambana was arrested in connection with the leaked matric examination.

Hawks Serious Corruption Unit investigation of the alleged Mathematics Paper 2 theft, says the publication. It’s reported that the arrest was made for the leaking of the Physics paper. The arrest was confirmed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to eNCA on Tuesday.

According to News24, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the 31-year-old accused works for a company, based in Johannesburg, that is contracted by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to print examination papers for matriculants this year.

Motshekga stated that it is yet to be determined whether the matriculants would have to rewrite as she is still waiting for feedback from the Hawks who are currently investigating the leak, reports IOL.

In a statement released today, the DBE said, “The Council of Education Ministers [CEM] held a special meeting this morning [Tuesday] to receive the preliminary report into the leaked Matric exam question papers.

“The Council agreed that the credibility, integrity and fairness of the examinations cannot be compromised.

“The report will be processed internally and Minister Motshekga will host a media briefing later this week to make an announcement.”

He was granted R 1 000 bail.
