On Tuesday 6 January 2021 SAPS Gelvandale Tracing Team arrested murder suspect Darren Lee Whitebooi. Whitebooi had been evading arrest since December 2020. He was apprehended in Helenvale, Port Elizabeth.

According to the SAPS Port Elizabeth statement, Whitebooi was wanted in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Chester Williams. Williams was shot and killed on 13 December 2020.

“It is alleged that on 13 December 2020 at about 08:00, Chester Williams (24) was kidnapped by three gang members in Fitchard Street in Helenvale. Friends of Williams approached the suspects and begged them to release Williams as he was not involved in any gang activity,” says Col Priscilla Naidu.

It is explained that while they were negotiating with the suspects, Williams managed to free himself and ran. The suspect, Darren Lee Whitebooi, fired several shots at the fleeing Williams. He was shot multiple times and died on the scene.”

Gelvandale Tracing Team members recognised the suspect on Wednesday 6 January and a chase followed. The suspect ran into a shack at the back of a house where he was arrested.

Whitebooi will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Friday, 8 January 2021 on a charge of murder.
