Eastern Cape police have opened an inquest docket after the body of Warrant Officer Nosipho Mphakathi was found floating in a Port St Johns river.

Reports say the 40-year-old police officer was last seen leaving her home in Tyibane by her son, on 8 December at 23:00. Mphakathi had been missing for four days, before a lodge owner noticed her lifeless body floating in the Mzimvubu River.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said Mphakathi’s body was retrieved from the Mzimvubu River after a massive search campaign on Saturday afternoon. The statement by SAPS stated that the body was retrieved at 15:00 near a known lodge.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of her death.

Provincial police commissioner Liziwe Ntshinga has sent condolences to Mpakathi’s family and friends.
