The police in Mpumalanga have launched a ‘vigorous’ manhunt for two dangerous suspects who managed to get out of lawful custody on Tuesday, 26 January.

The 24-year-old Sabelo Nkosi and 27-year-old Njabulo Nsibande are speculated to have escaped around the Gert Sibande District near the Ermelo Correctional Centre. The duo escaped while being transported from the Breyten Magistrate’s Court to the correctional centre.

“Nkosi and Nsibande were initially arrested after they reportedly committed various offences in December 2016. These offences include murder, attempted murder, two counts of rape as well as two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and were both on trial for the said charges,” Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says.

Nkosi and Nsibande appeared before the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court at Breyten on Monday, 25 January 2021.

Police have urged members of the public and families of the suspects to come forward with any information that may assist with the re-arrest of the escapees.

Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says that an internal investigation has been launched to understand how the suspects escaped.
