A 24-year-old man was arrested last night in the Thabanaswana village of Limpopo for allegedly killing a 13-year-old girl.

The arrest comes after neighbours reportedly discovered the victim’s body in nearby bushes in Thabanaswana village.

Police commenced with initial investigations and a manhunt for the suspect as soon as they arrived on the scene. SAPS has identified the 13-year-old as Lerato Ramatsela.

“It is believed that the young girl was tied and strangled to death. The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage . . . ” said Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the province’s SAPS spokesperson.

Ngoepe stated that the suspect – who lived in the area – was eventually nabbed at his home.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incident and praised officials for arresting the suspect within a short space of time.

The suspect is due to appear before the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
