Housing activist Wongeka Vimbayo, has been found dead in her shack in the Qandu-Qandu informal settlement near Green Point. It is suspected that the pregnant Vimbayo was raped before being killed and dumped in her shack. It seems that her eyes were removed, reported IOL.
The evil person removed my sister’s eyes.
Mandlenkosi, Vimbayo’s brother, told IOL that, “Her face had sand on and one hand was swollen up and bruised. She had no eyes. The evil person removed my sister’s eyes. We do believe she was raped because she was naked and that she might have been killed elsewhere, dumped there and locked up to rot.”
The anguished family will view Vimbayo’s body at Tygerberg Hospital today. Wongeka leaves behind a 5-year-old son.
Wongeka was part of the Housing Assembly Organisation dealing with housing inequalities in Cape Town
The Daily Voice further reported that Wongeka was part of the Housing Assembly Organisation dealing with housing inequalities in Cape Town, and an active member of the area committee in Ward 93. Councillor Thando Phimpi told the publication that he would see that the men in his ward stop gender-based violence.
“We condemn the act of violence in Ward 93 and soon we will call all men to come to a meeting where they will have to take a stand against GBV,” said Phimpi.
Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana told IOL that the mysterious circumstances leading to the murder are under investigation by Khayelitsha detectives and no arrests have thus been made.
