Health system expected to receive more than 4000 new healthcare workers in new year

In his National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) press briefing this week, the Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize welcomed the entry of more than 4000 healthcare workers to the health system in 2021.

The Health Minister says that they are concerned about the safety of healthcare workers and will engage with unions to discuss the resurgence and provincial readiness plans.

It was reported that in a few days, 2 367 medical interns and 1 693 medical community service practitioners will form part of a 7 895 strong community service workforce from all categories.

Mkhize also stated, “We are also cognizant of the non-COVID related services that need to continue.The alcohol ban will greatly assist to reduce the trauma burden on our facilities over the festive season and save lives.

We are still rolling out our catch up programmes to ensure that other essential health services continue to be delivered.”

Mkhize hopes that the new entrants will bring relief to the many exhausted frontline workers and strengthen the fight against Covid-19.
