The 18-year-old learner from the town of Bethelsdorp in the Eastern Cape was arrested on Monday for prohibited possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition after bringing a gun to school, reports News24.

In a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu stated, “. . . at about 12:00 members of SAPS Bethelsdorp Reaction Task Team immediately responded to information received of a learner possibly in possession of a firearm. On arrival at the school in Bethelsdorp, members were ushered to the suspected classroom.”

According to The Citizen, Naidu further stated that while the police were explaining the reason for their presence to the pupils, the suspect approached a police official and made it known that he had something in his bag. The suspect  – and his bag – were then removed from the classroom.

“Upon searching the bag in his presence, a .38 revolver was found with one round of ammunition. The serial number of the firearm was filed off,” said Naidu.

Brigadier Thandiswe Kupiso, the acting Mount Road Cluster Commander commended the team for their swift response, the arrest and subsequent confiscation.
