A 29-year-old G4S security guard has been murdered after collecting money at a supermarket in Heidedal, Bloemfontein on Monday, 4 January 2021.
According to a SAPS statement, the robbery allegedly occurred at 11:45 on Monday. Police spokesperson, Colonel Athlenda Mathe, security officials were conducting their daily duties collecting cash at a local supermarket when they were ambushed.
In the process, the cash was taken, the security official was disarmed of his pistol, shot and wounded. Consequently, the guard was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
“At the crime scene, police recovered a Nissan NP 300 that was utilized by the armed robbers. The vehicle was found to be stolen in a hijacking incident earlier this year in Mangaung,” said Mathe
MD of G4S South Africa, Reno Smit confirms in a News24 report that the security guard that was killed worked for G4S. He also alleges that the attackers did not manage to escape with any money as it was destroyed by G4S technology deployed at the scene during the ambush.
Smit has extended his condolences and sympathy to the security guard’s family and stated that they are devastated by the senseless and callous murder of their colleague.
It was also determined that the robbers fled the scene with a white Ford Ranger. A manhunt for the perpetrators has since been launched.
