Employee robs store with a toy gun in KZN

A store manager and his colleagues at a clothing store in a shopping centre at Brighton Beach in KwaZulu-Natal were accosted by an armed man yesterday at 10:00 while performing their duties.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele stated that the suspect instructed the manager to open the safe. The suspect then took an undisclosed amount of money, cellphones and “walked out like nothing had happened.”

“The Brighton Beach police together with security guards who were in the vicinity were immediately alerted and an operation was put in place to trace the suspect involved,” continued Mbele.

The team then spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description and searched him.

The 27-year-old suspect was found in possession of the stolen cash as well as a toy gun that was used to commit the robbery.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect is employed by the same store but in another branch,” Mbele informed.

The suspect was arrested and charged with robbery and is expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Fake customers rob store with real guns

In another incident, Brighton Beach arrested two suspects – aged 18 and 26 – for robbing a store in Wentworth, KZN.

Mbele stated that the complainant alleged that three men posing as customers entered his store yesterday at 12:30 and requested that he repair their cellphones. The complainant then demanded payment.

“One of [the] suspects withdrew his firearm, stole cellphones and fled the scene on foot. Police were informed and the suspects were arrested not far from the crime scene,” said Mbele.

The third suspect fled with the firearm. Police are still searching for this suspect.

While the suspects who were apprehended were found with the stolen cellphones in their possession.

The suspects will also appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
