In September 2017, a group of armed suspects held up two security guards at gunpoint at a Fidelity company in Vryheid. The group of suspects fled the scene with more than R 12 million with the assistance of a Fidelity guard.

The suspects demanded keys to the vaults which could not be located on the business site. It is alleged that their accomplice Mbuyiseni Mthembu, a guard employed at Fidelity, helped them gain access to the vault.

On Saturday, 20 March 2021 the 36-year-old suspect who had been evading the police since 2017, was eventually tracked and located at his hideout in Gauteng.

According to the Hawks’ investigation, the suspect conspired with Mbuyiseni Mthembu to gain access and rob the business. Mthembu was apprehended soon after the incident and was thereafter sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Madadeni High Court last year.

The 36-year-old suspect appeared in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery yesterday.
