A 37 year-old male, identified as Justice Lyke Ikachuku, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on charges of human trafficking.
It is alleged that Ikachuku kept a 23 year-old female hostage by proposing to be his girlfriend and promising her a hair salon and music studio.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Christopher Singo, the charges are based on incidents that occurred between Friday, 4 December 2020 and Sunday, 14 February 2021.
“He then coerced the victim to work as a sex slave. On several occasions Ikachuku booked the victim in different guest houses to meet clients. The money that she received for sexual exploitation was then collected by Ikachuku. The victim managed to escape after one of the client’s gave her R350 to run away,” said Singo.
The victim escaped and reported the crime to police. A case was opened and reported to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further investigation. This led to Ikachuku’s arrest on Friday, 26 February 2021.
The suspect appeared in court on Monday and the case against him was postponed to 8 March 2021 for a formal bail application.
