Basic Education Minister Angie Motsheka has confirmed that the two leaked Matric papers will be rewritten.

EWN reports that on Friday during a short media briefing, the minister confirmed the rewrite. The two papers scheduled to be rewritten are Maths paper 2 and Physical sciences paper 2.

This is the first time since the inception of Democracy that this has occurred. She said, “It’s a very sad decision to make. We’ve had provincial rewrites, but it’s the first time ever that we find ourselves having to do a national rewrite. There are sectors that are not in agreement, but we had to take the decision.”

Not an easy decision

Motsheka said that it was not an easy decision to make.

According to a report by VOC News, the rewrites are tentatively scheduled for the following dates.
• Mathematics Paper 2: 15 December 2020 – 14:00
• Physical Sciences Paper 2: 17 December 2020 – 09:00

Western Cape Education Department in a statement appealed for understanding and acknowledged that this will cause disappointment and may affect the plans of some of the candidates. The statement read, “These are exceptional circumstances and are ultimately in the interest of fairness to all candidates and the credibility of these examinations. There can be no traces of doubt in the integrity of the National Senior Certificate when the results are released. ”

One person has since been arrested in connection with the leaked papers.
