A 21-year-old mother and her 19-year-old accomplice have been arrested for allegedly forcing her 2-year-old son to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana.

The pair filmed the incident and posted it to social media on Saturday evening, the SAPS later tracked them down in the Rabali village in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the woman will be expected to appear in court on Monday 20 July.

“The two suspects were arrested on Saturday after the police accessed video clips that went viral on social media, showing the woman giving her son dagga to smoke and alcohol to consume. Her accomplice can be heard in the background persuading the little boy to indulge.”

Mojapelo said the suspects will face a charge of contravening the Children’s Act, 38 of 2005 [child abuse]. He said if they’re convicted, they may either be sent to jail for up to 10 years or fined.
