MEC Condemns Killing of 19-Year-Old Akhona Mncube

KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, condemned the killing of 19-year-old Akhona Mncube from Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg, allegedly at the hands of her partner.

According to reports, Akhona, also a young mother, disappeared for a few hours on Sunday and upon return was allegedly assaulted by her partner.

On Monday she, along with her 29-year-old partner, went to see a doctor. When they returned home, Akhona complained of a headache and died, reportedly from her internal injuries, shortly after.

Akhona’s body was found by members of the Umzansi Youth in Business (UYB) who went to visit her; they immediately contacted the police.

Speaking on the incident, MEC Khoza said, “The investigation should lead to the conviction and a lengthy jail sentence. All those who continue to violate the rights of women and children have no place in our society and therefore must be kept in prison for longer periods,”

A team of social workers have been tasked with providing psycho-social support services to the family.

The South African Police Service confirmed that an investigation into a case of murder was opened at the Plessislaer police station. The arrested 29-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
