The City of Cape Town’s Mayor, Dan Plato, announced that the Strandfontein Temporary homeless shelter will be closed down soon.

The mayor made the announcement saying it was always the City’s intention that this would be a temporary site.

“The closure of the Strandfontein Temporary Emergency Shelter is a non-debate, and the decommissioning process will proceed as originally planned by the City of Cape Town,” he said.

The shelter will be closing over the coming weeks, and the occupiers are said to be moved in a phased approach to a number of decentralised sites. Reports say that the last people are expected to leave the site on 20 May.

The City has emphasised that there could not simply be a blanket movement of persons and that any and all relocations would have to be in line with the current regulations, the medical and social needs of the occupants and their human rights.
