Cape Town – On 1 August, women and gender non-conforming people will join in the #TotalShutdown movement in a nationwide march to various governmental structures in a fight against gender-based violence.
The movement calls for women and gender non-conforming people to stay out of work and school to join the movement in support of all affected by gender-based violence.
People in support of the movement who are unable to join the march are encouraged to observe a moment of silence from 13:00 to 13:30.
The movement aims to highlight the apathy of the country’s leaders in dealing with gender-based violence and failure in allocating the necessary resources to aid victims.
A memorandum of demands will be handed over at Parliament in Cape Town, the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein and the Executive at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Supporters of the movement are urged to wear black with a touch of red in solidarity with victims and survivors of gender-based violence.
