JOHANNESBURG – The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema, made a call to the African National Congress to rename Cape Town International Airport to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Airport.
Following a high spirited speech in which Malema called out those he deemed as Winnie’s betrayers, he concluded by calling on the ANC to rename the airport in honour of the late freedom fighter.
The speech which was given at the struggle stalwart’s funeral service at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, has been trending on social media. Malema’s speech itself became one of the most talked about moments of the service.
The suggestion to rename the airport already had a few digital attempts to kick-start the process, all be it merely creative manipulation. A photo-shopped image of road signage showing the new name and the airport Wikipedia page temporarily having the name altered, contributed to the debate on social media.

With many online comments coming from those who reside outside of Cape Town, some Capetonians are waiting to hear the views from the majority of those *Vannie Kaap.

Cape Town International Airport was recently ranked as the best in Africa at the Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Stockholm, Sweden.
