CAPE TOWN – Two men from Wellington were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of author Winnie Rust.
Johannes and Nigel Plaatjies both received life sentences in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday for the robbing and killing of Afrikaans author Winnie Rust.
The robbery and murder took place on 11 May 2016 at Rust’s home. The pair were convicted in December for the incident that took place in Uitsig, Wellington.
Nigel was well known to Rust as she had helped him with his schoolwork and had also paid for his private tutoring. The victim also knew Nigel’s mother who had worked for her daughter.
Nigel insisted that her murder was never part of the plan. He admitted that he and his uncle only planned the robbery.
Rust’s relatives were present in the court room and publicly thanked those involved in the investigation.
The two men were swiftly led back to their cells after the sentencing. They showed zero emotion as the sentence was read out to them.
In addition to the life sentences, both Nigel and Johannes received 15 years for robbery, 5 years for fraud and 4 years for arson.
