National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, has signed off on the recommendation from the SAPS disciplinary committee that Western Cape Head of detectives Jeremy Vearey is fired.

In March 2021 Vearey received notification that he is being investigated for misconduct following a string of social media posts that allegedly brought the SAPS into disrepute and criticised national commissioner Khehla Sitole.

The sacking of Vearey has been criticised by Community Policing expert Eldred De Klerk. Speaking to Refilwe Moloto on Cape Talk, De Klerk said: “There’s this idea of unquestionable loyalty to the institution, where criticism and any questioning will not be tolerated. The broader contention from all of us needs to be the question: Since when did criticism of your so-called superiors constitute an offence that merits being fired in a Constitutional democracy?”

While many believe Vearey can and should appeal, there is no confirmation yet whether he will indeed take the matter further.
