One girl reportedly dead and one critically injured after being crushed by a truck they were “surfing” on in Mitchells Plain on Wednesday afternoon.
The Daily Voice reports that at about 16:00, two girls – aged 12 and 13, who are known to truck surf on passing trucks in the Freedom Park area – hopped onto a construction truck that was driving in Kilimanjaro Street.
According to a witness, the 12-year-old was by the wheel, while the 13-year-old was hanging at the back of the truck. “The vehicle came to a halt at the stop street on Kilimanjaro Street.
“And then the girls fell off. I don’t think the driver was aware of the girls because he reversed, crushing both of them.”
The witness told the publication that the 12-year-old died on the scene.
“When I went to the scene, I went to check her and told myself that is not my child lying there. I still can’t believe that she is gone,” says Juanita Louw, the mother of the 12-year-old, to the publication. “This is such a huge shock, maybe it will all sink in when I am alone at home.”
It is reported that the 13-year-old, who was rushed to Lentegeur District Hospital, suffered organ damage and internal bleeding.
The death of the 12-year-old is now being investigated by Mitchells Plain SAPS, said SAPS’ FC van Wyk.
The publication reports that a case of culpable homicide has been opened.
