The bodies of a teenage girl and toddler have been found following a fire that broke out in Phola Park in Gugulethu on Saturday night.

A spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, Jermaine Carelse, says that they received an emergency call around 18:30 on Saturday night, informing them of informal structures that were burning in Phola Park.

Carelse says that fire crews from the Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain, Epping and Belhar station were deployed to the scene. During their firefighting operations, the crews discovered the bodies.

“The fire was extinguished at 20:57 leaving several structures destroyed and some residents displaced. The cause of the blaze is unknown and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service,” Carelse says.

The police’s Captain FC van Wyk says that a death inquest case has been opened for investigation after 17 informal structures were burnt down.

Van Wyk says the bodies that were discovered is that of a 15-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy.  Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
