In 2019, 42-year-old Justin Canhavano was arrested for the alleged murder of his girlfriend and two other victims. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison in Blue Downs Magistrate this week.
On Sunday, 05 May 2019, at around 03:15, Justino Canhavano confronted his 27-year-old girlfriend in his shack in Happy Valley. The confrontation resulted in the death of three people.
According to SAPS, he found her in the shack with two other people. He confronted her about his suspicion that she was drinking alcohol with other people while leaving their child unattended at home. He was forced out of the shack after an argument ensued.
Canhavano later returned and set the shack alight while the victims were still inside. The fire obliterated the shack and killed all three victims.
Community members retaliated and assaulted the suspect. SAPS were alerted and then apprehended the suspect. Canhavano later confessed to the crime.
SAPS further reported that the suspect initially appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 09 May 2019. The suspect was denied bail.
On Tuesday, 09 February 2021, after two years, Justino Canhavano was found guilty for the triple murder of:
- 22-year-old female Sikelela Mihle from Happy Valley,
- 27-year-old female Nomveliso Sithole from Happy Valley (suspect’s girlfriend), and
- Daniel, a male whose details are still unknown at this stage.
“Another killer off the streets,” said Constable Timothy Harris from the Serious and Violence Crime’s (SVC) unit at Mfuleni police station.
