On Wednesday evening, a security guard at a retail centre in Sunningdale was allegedly approached by three armed robbers who burgled a bicycle store.
Just after 21:00, the suspects gained access to the store by entering through a window which had been smashed with a concrete slab, said police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut in a statement.
“The suspects fled with a number of bicycles in a getaway vehicle.”
Although his cellphone and hand radio was taken away during the robbery, the security guard managed to activate a panic button which alerted the armed response team.
Within minutes the team arrived at the scene, causing the suspects to flee.
According to the statement, Table View police were also alerted and joined the armed response officers in search of the suspects.
“. . . the robbers were cornered and stopped their vehicle and fled further on foot in different directions. Police fired one shot and injured one of the suspects and arrested him. His accomplices managed to escape and are being sought.”
Traut said the injured suspect was taken to hospital for treatment and will appear in court after being discharged.
The stolen bicycles – said to be worth R850 000 – have all been recovered.
