The frantic search for the 23-year-old Thokozani Mthethwa has ended. The lifeguard’s body was found by divers on Monday afternoon.
Mthethwa together with a senior lifeguard launched a jetski to help a kite surfer in distress on Saturday 28 November, at Muizenberg beach. According to the report in CapeTownEtc, his body was found yesterday afternoon between Strandfontein and Mnandi beach.
On Sunday, Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien said, “Just before 15:00, Muizenberg lifeguards responded to the call about the kite surfer by launching their jet ski. The senior lifeguard was operating the craft, with the seasonal lifeguard on the rescue sled,” reported IOL.
Badroodien also said that it is assumed that Mthethwa was knocked off the sled about 50 to 100 metres offshore, and then disappeared in the water.
The beach was closed on Sunday “to allow rescuers to work quickly and efficiently”, reported the publication. The intensive search was conducted by NSRI, lifeguards, and police divers.
Mthethwa was employed by The City of Cape Town as a seasonal lifeguard. Counselling has been arranged for his colleagues, family, and friends.
