Teacher re-arrested on second charge of alleged sexual assault

44-year-old man from Surrey Estate, the principal of the Halawat Ul Qur’an Hifdth Academy in Ottery, was re-arrested for alleged child assault and molestation, reported The Daily Voice.

The accused, Abdul Karim Davids, first appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on charges of alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in September 2019. The most recent charge, as reported by The Daily Voice dates back to May 2007.

Colonel Dawood Laing confirmed that the accused was re-arrested on the 16th of November after a complainant opened a case of alleged sexual assault at the Grassy Park SAPS.

Laing told the publication that, “The victim only came to the police station on 6 November this year based on the fact that she felt that she should speak out against all sexual abuse.”

The Muslim Judicial Council have since released a statement calling for the hifz teacher to step down from all positions with immediate effect, or for the governing body of the Hifdth School to suspend him.

The council has also urged all victims to break their silence as we enter 16 days of activism against GBV.

Released on bail

The Daily Voice reported that Davids appeared in court on Monday to face the new charges and was released on bail.

According to Colonel Laing the next appearance for the court case is 27 November. VOC News further confirmed that both cases with run concurrently.
