On Saturday 19 December, a female hiker aged 42 years old, died while attempting to ascend Table Mountain.
According to TimesLIVE, the female collapsed at Skeleton Gorge shortly after 10:00. Johan Marais, the spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), told the publication that his team was alerted to the incident report of an unconscious hiker about 200m from the top of Skeleton Gorge. Sadly efforts to revive the woman was not successful.
Marias said, “A vehicle with two paramedics proceeded via Constantia Nek and followed the jeep track into the back of Table Mountain to get to the top of Skeleton Gorge.”
“In the meantime three more vehicles and a number of operatives deployed to Constantia Nek. By the time the hasty team reached the patient, other persons reported that they had been administering CPR for about an hour.”
Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana told News24 that the circumstances around the incident were unclear and will be investigated.
According to a VOC News report, the woman was from Johannesburg. VOC News reported that she had fallen and hit her chin on one of the steps of the trail.
Deanna Bessick, EMS spokesperson told VOC News, “When the first team of EMS responders arrived at the scene, the patient was dead upon arrival. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
